Bentonite began mining in Wyoming in 1888, activated clay was first developed in Texas in 1906, and bentonite was widely used in iron ore pellets in the 1950 s.
At present, the global bentonite mining volume is about 14 million tons, of which the United States more than 4.2 million tons, China has more than 3.4 million tons. The main application markets are foundry industry, pet washers, drilling mud and iron ore pellets. Other consumer areas are waterproofing and sealing materials, petrochemicals, fillers and others.
Bentonite is used for steel pellets: China's pellet production capacity exceeds 0.1 billion tons, and the addition amount of bentonite in pellets is 1.5-4.5. For every 1% reduction in bentonite, the grade is increased by 0.6, the coke ratio is reduced by 1.2, and the output is increased by 1.8. The main development direction is to reduce the amount of binder and improve the grade.
Application of bentonite in casting: China's total casting output is about 30 million t, accounting for 31% of the global total, sand casting accounts for about 80%, and the effective bentonite in wet clay sand needs to be kept at 3-6%. Improving the thermal stability and reusability of cast bentonite is the main goal of improving product quality.
Application of bentonite in drilling fluid: "World Petroleum" in 2001, oil field mud was divided into 9 systems, 6 of which were water-based, the other was oil-based and synthetic-based, and the last one was air, fog, foam and gas as circulating media. Most of the drilling fluid in China is water-based mud system, while the proportion of oil-based mud in foreign countries reaches 80%. Bentonite is the main treatment agent for drilling mud. The average dosage of bentonite in 10,000-meter drilling footage is about 50 tons.
Bentonite used in trenchless engineering: shield, HDD, pipe jacking and through the modern trenchless construction technology, all need bentonite lubrication, support, suspension, in the subway, tunnel, mine and other underground engineering construction application is more and more widely. Bentonite is required to have high gel strength, low fluid loss, low sand content, and a suitable polymer.
Bentonite pet litter product-cat litter: Bentonite used as litter requires strong absorption of liquid and odor, at least, uniform particle size, and does not disintegrate after moisture. At present, the main market is North America, the annual demand has reached 1.3 million tons.
Application of bentonite in waterproof materials: waterproof board was trial-produced in the 1970 s, waterproof blanket was made in the 1990 s, and the outer layer was made of high-density polyethylene and geotextile, which was widely used in waterproof engineering. The subways, highways, airports, reservoirs, dams and construction projects built in the United States, Canada and other countries in the past 20 years are mainly made of bentonite waterproofing. Naue Fasertechnik and CETCO are the main manufacturers.
Application of bentonite waterproof blanket: In the waterproof construction of subway projects and building basements at home and abroad, bentonite waterproof materials have been widely used, and the total amount used has exceeded 80 million square meters. China's annual demand for bentonite waterproof blankets in engineering waterproofing, landfills, water conservancy projects, highways and other fields is 5000-70 million square meters. In recent years, the production capacity of bentonite waterproof blanket in China has developed rapidly, and the product quality and construction technical specifications need to be improved urgently.
