China’s Bentonite Industry: Despite a decline in production, market demand continues to grow steadily.

Bentonite is a non-metallic mineral resource whose primary constituent is montmorillonite. Its defining feature lies in the crystal structure of montmorillonite, which adopts a 2:1 layered arrangement—two silicon–oxygen tetrahedra sandwiched between a single aluminum–oxygen octahedron. Because the unit cell of montmorillonite exhibits a layered architecture and contains cations such as Cu, Mg, Na, and K, the interactions between these cations and the montmorillonite lattice are inherently unstable, allowing them to be readily exchanged by other cations. Consequently, bentonite possesses excellent ion-exchange properties.
